JAR-FCL Private Pilots Licence

The syllabus for the Private Pilots Licence requires a minimum of 45 hours of flying instruction of which 35 hours are dual (with an instructor) & 10 hours are solo. As every person learns at a different rate, the following hourly breakdown is an approximate guide to the different stages of your flying training.

Hours Instruction
0-10 Basic skills required to pilot an aeroplane leading to the first solo.
11-24 More advanced training and solo flying.
25-38 Navigation training of which 5 hours are solo.
39-45 Instrument flying & preparation for the PPL skills test.

Ground School
Alongside the practical training there are 7 ground exams & 1 oral radiotelephony exam to pass at appropriate stages of your training. These subjects cover:


  • Aviation Law
  • Human Performance & Limitations
  • Flight Performance & Planning
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Aircraft Technical
  • Radiotelephony (2, written & oral)


Ground School is an integral part of your training and is conducted on a self study basis with your instructor available to help you if you get stuck.

All exams and tests are conducted in-house.

Medical Requirements
Before you can fly solo and in order to maintain your pilots licence, you will need to hold JAR Class 2 or greater medical certificate.

Your medical will need to be conducted by an approved Aeromedical Examiner of which we will be happy to advise you. A Class 2 medical is the basic medical requirement to hold a private pilots licence.

Booking lessons
Each lesson is given a two hour booking, allowing time for your flight briefing with your instructor before the flight and a debriefing after you return where your instructor will assess your progress. making your training as efficient as possible.

Your First Solo Flight
A momentous occasion for all involved in your training when your instructor steps out of the aeroplane and leaves you to your first solo flight.

One take-off circuit and landing will admit you to the fraternity of pilots and a memory to last a lifetime.
